GAWW was set up in 1984 and registered as a Non Governmental, Non Profit Making Organization soon after the establishment of the Inter African committee IAC as a National Committee.

GAWW has its head quarters in Accra and focal persons in the 4 regions where FGM is commonly practiced.

Even though our programs cover the whole country, our work has been concentrated in the Upper East, Upper West, Northern and Brong Ahafo regions where FGM is commonly practiced as a tradition.

GAWW plans to extend and intensity its activities to the whole of Ghana.

Current activities:

GAWW’s efforts are currently directed at eliminating Harmful Traditional Practices that affect the general well being of women and children especially FGM, and to promote the basic human rights of women.

Currently GAWW’s activities are focused in the 3 Northern and Brong Ahafo region where they are undertaking programs geared towards behavior change and grass root activism to eliminate FGM.
